Chapter 18
âI donât know how else to say it, so Iâm just going to say it.â
The words were on the tip of Willâs tongue, and he knew no matter how far apart he and Rachel may be on this, no matter what her reaction might be, he couldnât keep it to himself any longer.
âHow could you possibly find that ferry ride scarier than driving over this bridge?â
âOh, itâs no contest,â she said. âThis bridge has been here for a million years and is like a four- or five-minute ride over solid ground. The ferry was twenty minutes at sea.â
âIâm sorry, is the fact that the bridge is old supposed to make me feel more comfortable? Because apparently Iâve read more stories about the crumbling state of our nationâs infrastructure than you have.â
She laughed. âThatâs fun for you. I just mean that clearly itâs stood the test of time.â
âAnd solid ground? Have you looked over the edge at whatâs under it? Itâs a two-hundred-foot drop into the abyss.â
âI told you Iâd be happy to drive,â Rachel said, breaking off a piece of the peanut butter fudge. It was a little after 8:00 Tuesday morning, and they had grabbed coffee and tea but foregone breakfast in order to get on the road early for the four-hour drive downstate to Ann Arbor.
âNo, it would be worse if I werenât the one driving,â Will said. âHaving a job to do is distracting me just enough to keep me from having a repeat of the Sears Tower.â
âWell, then here, have some more of this.â She held out a piece of fudge to him. âItâs so delicious you wonât be able to think about anything else.â
With his hands locked at ten and two, he glanced from the road to her offering and then back again. âNo thanks, the one was good.â
âSeriously, Iâm going to eat the whole slice if you donât take some.â
âI donât think Iâm really a fudge guy.â
Rachel pulled the piece back and bit it. âYouâre kidding, right?â she said through her chewing. âOh my Godâitâs so good. Itâs like if they took that sunset last night and turned it into candy.â
âI donât know. I always want fudge to be better than it actually is. Does that make sense?â
âNo. No it doesnât. And Iâm now reconsidering our entire relationship.â
âIâm sorry to hear that. At least weâll always have last night.â
The return carriage ride to the ferry, the ferry across the water, and then the short drive back to the hotel had basically served as extended foreplay, their bodies in constant contact with one another. The way theyâd touched hadnât been scandalous, but it definitely had conveyed what was going to happen as soon as they got to their room. Rachel had ripped his new shirt yanking it off him. Neither of them had seemed to mind.
âSo whyâd you let me buy so much?â she asked, returning the fudge box to the back seat.
Even knowing they were within their budget, Will had started
